Agronomists and farmers are reminded to scout for stalk and ear rots of corn as harvest nears, as stalk rots may be more prevalent this year, due to the stressful growing season across most of Iowa.

Six Iowa teams participated in the Iowa State University Extension and Outreach and Integrated Pest Management (IPM) program’s seventh annual Crop Scouting Competition on July 31. The first place overall winning team at this year’s competition is Kuhlman Seed from Denison.

Iowa State University Extension and Outreach has a series of resources designed to help farmers scout their crops for potential issues to be managed.

The seventh annual Crop Scouting Competition for Iowa Youth will be July 31 at the Field Extension Education Laboratory in Boone, Iowa at 1928 240th Street.

Iowa State University Extension and Outreach has published the Field Crop Scouting book as an online learning tool for students and ag professionals in Iowa. This interactive textbook allows individuals to acquire knowledge about crop scouting topics such as corn and soybean growth stages, insect identification, crop diseases and weed identification through a self-paced, innovative design.

The top two teams of youth from Iowa, Nebraska and Indiana state crop scouting competitions competed in the Regional Crop Scouting Competition on Aug. 31 in Boone, Iowa. Both Iowa teams, Clayton County and Kuhlmann Seed, placed first and second at the regional competition.

The Corn and Soybean Field Guide, produced by Iowa State University Extension and Outreach, combines the Corn Field Guide 2nd Edition and the Soybean Field Guide 2nd Edition into one publication for a more efficient version.

Eight Iowa teams participated in the Iowa crop scouting competition Aug. 2. The competition is conducted by the ISU Extension and Outreach Integrated Pest Management program.

Two new publications specifically for corn and soybean farmers provide easy-to-read disease listings and overviews, basic instructions for using diagnostic and scouting tools, and non-technical management recommendations.
