Iowa State University Extension and Outreach is reviving its Community Tree Steward program, a seven-meeting course designed to train community members on proper selection, care and maintenance of trees.

New forestry resources are available from Iowa State University Extension and Outreach to assist with emerald ash borer management decisions. ISU Extension and Outreach has released three new publications to assist in making informed decisions about hiring arborists and selecting replacement trees.

A large number of towns across Iowa will be hosting events this weekend in celebration of National Arbor Day. All 81 communities that have TreeCityUSA designations have an activity planned that is open to the public.

On Dec. 17, 2016, a large tree fell on a wedding party near Los Angeles, Calif., killing one and injuring several others. While fatalities from falling trees are uncommon, this incident is a worthy reminder of the importance of properly maintaining and pruning trees in urban landscapes.

Healthy, properly planted trees can have a tremendously positive impact on urban environments, says Gabbi Edwards, urban forestry specialist with Iowa State University Extension and Outreach. She specializes in proper planting and pruning of trees, as well as how to select the right tree for an area.

Iowans may notice fewer scurrying squirrels in their yards, thanks to a late spring frost that negatively impacted hard nut production in many areas throughout the state.
