Beef producers will learn about risk management topics such as costs of wintering cattle, available insurance options and a general beef cattle outlook at a beef cattle risk management workshop Nov. 8 near Chariton. Joe Sellers, ISU Extension and Outreach beef specialist, has organized the event.

Just two sessions remain in this year’s Greenhorn Grazing series in southern Iowa, and people who want to attend are encouraged to register soon for accurate meal count.

Meetings for crop and livestock producers in south-central Iowa currently experiencing moderate and severe drought are scheduled for early August. Prior to the meeting start, producers may have up to five corn stalk samples assessed for nitrates.

A three-day late summer bus tour -- the Cow Caravan -- features some of Iowa’s successful grazing and confinement cow operations. The Aug. 29-31 tour is a component of the Iowa Beef Center’s Cow Systems Project, created to evaluate management practices among operations ranging from extensive grazing systems to year-round confinement.
 

The 2017 field day of the Iowa State University McNay Memorial Research Farm will provide updates on grazing and cover crops, including a pasture tour spotlighting weed control techniques and planning for stockpiled grazing. The Aug. 2 event also will provide the latest in selected beef cattle research projects and specific results on the farm cattle.
 

Grazing management and managing tall fescue are the topics to be covered during southern Iowa beef management workshops May 30, 31 and June 1.

Iowa State University Extension and Outreach will host an update for veterinarians on May 31 at the McNay Memorial Research and Demonstration Farm near Chariton, Iowa.

Iowa State University Extension and Outreach specialists Patrick Gunn and Joe Sellers have created a new fact sheet, "Pasture and Grazing Arrangements for Beef Cattle," for those who use pasture and grazing rentals in their operations.

Livestock producers interested in learning to optimize forage and livestock production while conserving natural resources are invited to attend the 2017 Iowa Greenhorn Grazing series in Winterset.

On-Farm workshop will cover unique management techniques of calving in hoop barns. ISU Extension and Outreach and local farmer will share experiences and research related to hoop barn calving.
